Foolproof Old Fashioned Oats

Rolled Oats

Cooking old fashioned oats is my favorite way to eat oatmeal for breakfast. When you need a morning meal that keeps you feeling full and fueled ALL morning, oats are all that you need. This recipe will give your oats a sweet flavor with a few spices to balance it all out.

Though this is not instant oatmeal, I think it has a much better taste and texture than the alternative. In addition, you have more control over the outcome. Unlike instant oatmeal, you can’t make this one in a microwave while you’re out, but you can easily transfer it to a small container and take it with you to work, school, or wherever you start your day.

Tip: These oats are delicious when eaten the following day as well. The texture changes and the oats become stickier, but if you don’t like that texture you can add a little (non-dairy) milk, to create a beautiful porridge.


Foolproof Rolled Oats

  • ¼ cup Bob’s Red Mill ™ Old Fashioned Rolled Oats
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 tsp Earth Balance™ Butter
  • 1 tbsp Brown Sugar (can substitute with agave)
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1 pinch Sea Salt
  • 1 pinch Nutmeg (optional)


  1. In a saucepan add 1 cup of water
  2. Let water come to a boil
  3. Add oats
  4. Let cook on medium high for 4-5 minutes
  5. Strain access water
  6. Place oats back in sauce pan and remove from heat
  7. Stir in butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, sea salt, and nutmeg
  8. Add in fresh fruit of your choice
  9. Top with additional cinnamon (optional)
